I have decided to do some writing as well! This I find somewhat easier than drawing, so keep tuned!

My style is mainly fantasy, but I do some related genre work as well, such as science fiction, alternative reality, medieval. I love writing long stories, but sometimes short stories are more accessible to online readers.

Ever since I have learnt to touchtype I have managed to do all sorts of wonderful things with text on a computer. Some time I must play typershark again, just to see how good I am.

All of my public writing I do on sta.sh, which has this awesome autosave function. Evidently the disk that they have the work stored on is capable of zillions of writes.

I want my writing to entertain people. Unlike art, writing is capable of holding somebody else's attention for a longer time. Sometimes what is possible in writing is not possible in art. Really, a cat playing with a slinky takes ages to draw, but takes just a few seconds to call into being with text.

I am interested in other peoples' writing as well - if only to measure myself against them. Sometimes you learn a few new words here and there. People who watch me take priority.

I find writing very relaxing - as I write, I am transported into my own perfect world, where there are no limits to where my imagination can go.

Writing is also good in that it is episodic and you can easily dip in and out of a written piece. This is more difficult to do with art, where whole swathes of time go into one piece.

I got reminded today of how important it is to have the right tools when painting. Finally today I have produced something worthy to show my family, it's in scraps because it looks hurried, but it could have gone into my main gallery, and I'm happy with it. I plan to digitally paint every day, even if it's only for an hour, I'm very busy but art keeps me going. Also wouldn't it be cool to become a concept artist and get paid for doing something you really like. Though my current job is fascinating enough, the grass always seems to be greener on the other side. If I ever become a concept artist I will probably daydream of being something else again.

I am currently accepting commissions, if you want me to draw you something please send me a note with the specifications.

Update: I would really love to draw a bike, tango dancers, armour and a city scene but don't really have time to devote pieces directly around these themes. I shall just have to incorporate these into my competition entries. I also have some really good ideas to draw more serious topics, such as calamities and scientific images.

Update: I would really like to enter the Skywards future artists competition, but don't know whether I have the time.

Repeating the last bit of my last journal entry, if you comment on any of my pictures I'll comment on your pictures. I'm currently waiting for the contest results to the Kiseki contest 31st July, the Zen Master Challenge 11th July, Draw Hoshi contest 30th July, Snowy-Ninja's contest 21st July, The Lost Kids Art Contest 8th August. Also I have just discovered a great way of copying pictures when the canvas goes off the screen - simply start off with a canvas within the screen, then later enlarge the canvas and continue the picture. I'm practising my colouring with openCanvas, which at the moment seems to fall short of its objective.

Update: So at the moment it's back to my old method of using pencil first, then using simple shading on openCanvas. I'm keeping tab on my contest entries and find that I am more likely to win contests with smaller prizes than contests with larger prizes.

Update: Recently my eyes have been opened to the great work you can do with coloured pencils, such as Hellobaby's work and that by the artists at Coloredpencilartists. So I'm switching mediums from digital to purely traditional. I think this is an exciting time.

Update: I haven't made much headaway with coloured pencils, looks like it's back to digital then. I think I stand a better chance of winning if I submit late into a contest. Planning on entering Qara's Your Favorite contest 1st August.

Update: I'm cancelling that last contest entry. My scraps gallery is seeing quite a bit of action these days, but I haven't done any major artworks.

Update: Once again I am reminded of how supportive DA is, how nice people generally are on here. This is not found in other communities.

Update: I forgot how much my digital art expertise has been lost during my art hiatus. I only remembered that before final lines preliminary lines had to be drawn in blue on oekaki, and this was by looking at somebody else's oekaki animation. :eager:

At the moment my current strategy of pencil outlines and digital colouring appear to be coming on nicely, with the pictures done in a reasonable length of time. If I had known I would have improved so fast I would have delayed my contest entry to the Kiseki contest 31st July, but I suppose I'll have a better chance of winning the next contest I enter. My ArtRage work files for drawings done this way are huge, so I'm not keeping them, just the lineart and the finished piece.

I did fleetingly have an idea last night of drawing finished pieces using pencil, complete with shading, but that is beyond me at the moment, I am rather cautious of changing my lovely finished pencil outlines with shading which may ruin it all :D . I really like digital colouring, the fact that the original can still be saved. I also had an idea last night of posting more acrylic on canvas works, but at the moment bit short of art materials for this. Also if I keep changing mediums my energy gets dissipated and I never get to really perfect a certain skill. For example Wen-M follows a strategy where he draws with a technical pencil, then scans the drawing then colours it in Photoshop. That's all he ever does and he does it well.

Update: Considering entering the Zen Master Challenge 11th July, TwistedFates Character Design Contest, A Splash of Colour Contest, arcturus17's Challenge, KeeganR's contest.

Update: Found some art that was lost from my backup but in my DA gallery. There were only a few pieces missing. Makes me feel really thankful for these online galleries. Finished the Zen Master Challenge. the finished piece could have been more detailed, but overall I am satisfied with the result. Considering entering Draw Hoshi contest 30th July. I have switched my software from ArtRage to openCanvas 1.1, the latter program has a better feel to it which invites fine work.

Update: Received a tip from daniel-w to keep pencils sharp for a better effect, just tried it on my B pencil and my picture now looks a lot better. Finished the Draw Hoshi contest entry. Considering entering Snowy-Ninja's contest 15th July. I think I will get through my current list of contests before adding new ones, next time I add a list of contests I will keep it within seven to keep up with TimberClipse's weekly list. I keep going back to my Shadowgale Serious picture and thinking it could have been better, will probably delete it after the contest winners have been announced on 25th July.

Update: Finished Snowy-Ninja's contest entry. Considering entering The Lost Kids Art Contest 1st August. I've decided to only talk about art on DA.

Update: Finished The Lost Kids Art contest entry. I think that's the last contest entry I'll do in a while, all those character specifications detract me from my final image. And of course the final image is all-important. That concludes my one a day drawing challenge!

Update: Decided to ditch pencil and paper in favour of drawing on the tablet in openCanvas only. I've had so much feedback from the forums regarding how the digital medium was faster than traditional methods, and about practising on the tablet as much as possible. Also if you left me a comment on my artwork I will leave a comment on your artwork.

Back on DA

7 min read
Today I'm back on DA again after a long time away from it, drawing just seems to be something I can't live without. I've decided to concentrate on real subjects rather than fantasy ones as my drawing is something which I show other people, as real life is always far more interesting.

Somewhat annoyingly I haven't been able to find where I kept the master copies of my old art, and I might have overwritten them, but never mind that's hardly what's important. Isn't it good my online gallery is still here.

Update: Actually I have found my master copies, I suppose because I liked them so much I took care of it. I have found all of my old digital art and some more I forgot I had.

Update: At the moment I just submit to my scrapbook, all of my new art are sketches done in ArtRage 2. I found some of my old art I hadn't backed up onto disc on a forum I used to visit, and uploaded this into my gallery.

Update: Considering joining in the Kiseki contest.

Update: Putting all of my copies into the sketchbook, and all of my original art in the main gallery. This is so my gallery gets updated now and then, I only seem to have time to do sketches nowadays. Also trying to write more in my picture descriptions. Today I tried to use a more complex reference photo but had some difficulty copying it accurately, so I'm going to go back to using simple photo references.

Update: I have managed to get around a large drawing block by using references of actual artwork some found on deviantart, using even simple photo references was beyond me, realism requires such a large amount of details I don't have the time, I don't think I even have the time in my lifetime to do such photorealistic paintings. Plus the subject matter of actual artwork is always pretty interesting, this is not so with all photos, I tend to like drawing people. I have finally finished the lineart for my entry into the Kiseki contest. At first I was going to colour it in digitally but considering how over 5 years I have only managed to do 15 polished deviations the speed of digital paint is rather slow for me. The contest entry will be traditional media, graphite on paper. The results are spectacular but I think my main medium will be pencil now in an effort to produce more pictures. How very ironic when my handle chr0ma means "saturation", none of my upcoming pictures will have any at all. All of my friends on DA are very quiet, I suppose everyone has periods where they are productive and when they are not.

Update: I have now finished my Kiseki contest entry.

Update: I now use loads of references from the internet. I usually take a pose from one picture, then the clothing from my imagination, then the background from another. I have just joined the traditional media group. Received feedback from Tannanana about colouring in my pieces, what a good idea. However colouring digitally is so time consuming, I can't possibly do this for all my pieces, literally I think it used to take me months to finish, now with pencil on paper it's within hours. At the moment I'm trying acrylic on canvas too, I just can't get the watercolour working unless I use very heavy paper or stretch the piece.
